If you are in the market for a prepaid card, you might wonder where you can find them in a retail outlet. Odds are, many of the places you already shop offers prepaid cards. They are available at these retail chains:
Jewel Foods
Walgreens
CVS
Dominicks
7-11
Rite-Aid
Wal Mart
K-Mart
In fact, these cards are nearly ubiquitous these days. You might ask, "Where can I find them once I am in the store?" They typically are hanging on the display rack along with gift cards and prepaid phone cards. Look for card displays on end caps of aisles, especially near the check out registers. Sometimes they are also hanging at each check out aisle. In a store like Wal Mart, there's an area up front (past the checkouts) known as the Money Center. Here you'll find prepaid cards, and Greendot MoneyPaks, which is a not a prepaid card but a method for loading a prepaid card. You pay $4.95 for the MoneyPak and then give the cashier the amount of money you want to put on the Pak. Then you call a toll free number and transfer the full amount on the Moneypak to your prepaid card. You can't really do both in the same trip, because it takes a while for your application for a prepaid card to be approved and activated. You be approved for activation, you have to provide your personal information, including government issued identification such as social security number and your date of birth. This is required under the U.S. Patriot Act to prevent misuse of the card.
Alternatively, in anywhere in the United States, you can go online and apply for a card. There's no cost to apply, and no credit check. This is true for any prepaid debit card you might want to order. There are a bewildering array of brand names on these cards. Fact is, only a handful of banks issue the card (meaning control the funds on the card) and Visa and MasterCard are the two debit networks used by the card and that's what logo you will see on it. Wherever Visa or MasterCard debit is accepted is where you can use the card. If you are going to travel internationally, be sure you have a card that is accepted Internationally like the MiCash card, for example.
There is a trend of colleges moving to prepaid cards as a way to disperse student loan money. For example, City Colleges of Chicago launched a program that about a third of its students who receive student loans adopted. They have three choices at this school for how to get their student loan money:
Paper Check (costs the college money to print and mail)
Direct deposit to a checking account or any prepaid card
Prepaid Card set up by the college
Urban areas have a higher concentration of the unbanked than found in rural or suburban environments. There are millions of people who have trouble getting a traditional checking account and hence a traditional debit card. There millions more with bad credit. For these unbanked or underserved folks, prepaid cards make sense. They have fees, such as a monthly fee, and a fee every time you buy something with the card (e.g., 95 cents). However, often they are more cost effective than alternatives, such as getting a paper check and having to then cash it at a check cashing place.

Checking the balance of your Visa gift card is essential. This is a convenient way to pay for your purchases but if turned out that your card funds are less than the total of your purchases, your gift card will surely be declined.
There are a couple of ways to check the balance of your card. Here is what you need to do:
Method 1: Call your visa card provider. The numbers are usually included in the papers with the card. Call that number and ask your remaining balance. Now remember to jot it down so you won't forget. They will just ask you your pin details so they can check for your balance.
Method 2: There is the manual way of checking and that is to collect the receipts form the shopping transactions you made using the card. Add up the total and then deduct it from the original fund of your card. Simple math, isn't it? Just don't forget to staple your receipts together so you do not miscalculate your total card expenses.
It is important that you follow these methods as the remaining balance of your card will not reflect on the system of most department stores. The card will just be declined without you knowing why.
Also, it is important to know the balance so you can maximize your card. If your total exceeds the balance of the card, you can ask the cashier to use up the amount of money left in the card and the rest of your payments will be made with another method of payment.

Maybe you have heard about the free Walmart gift card programs that are being offered. Getting your own free card is really quite simple, all you need to do is find an offer online and signup. It could be that you have already done this, and you forgot about it. You might have just rummaged through your purse and found an old card and you are not sure if you have a balance on it.
It really is quite easy to see if you have a balance on your card. One way is to turn the card over and see if it has an eight hundred number on the back that you can call. This phone number can be used to call and they will tell you your balance.
Some cards have a website url on the back that you can access, and all you do is visit the website and enter your card number and it will reveal how much money is left on the card.
If neither of those options are available to you, you can always just take the card down to Walmart, have the cashier scan it and he or she will easily be able to help you out. All they do is scan the card and balance is instantly known.
One final place to look is doing an online search with Yahoo or Bing and try to find websites that will find the balance for you. All you do is enter your card number on their online form and they can then show you the balance. I would be a little wary of this last method considering all of the online scammers out there today.
Once you find out if you have a balance you can shop it off. If you do not want to do this something else to consider is selling your card balance. There are two ways to do this that I have found. The first way is to sell it on eBay, and what I have found is that many people can get ninety cents on the dollar from an online auction this way. The second way is to find websites out there that will pay you for your card balances. You need to search them out on a search engine, but these companies do exist and they pay for gift card balances.

Maybe you have heard about the free Walmart gift card programs that are being offered. Getting your own free card is really quite simple, all you need to do is find an offer online and signup. It could be that you have already done this, and you forgot about it. You might have just rummaged through your purse and found an old card and you are not sure if you have a balance on it.
It really is quite easy to see if you have a balance on your card. One way is to turn the card over and see if it has an eight hundred number on the back that you can call. This phone number can be used to call and they will tell you your balance.
Some cards have a website url on the back that you can access, and all you do is visit the website and enter your card number and it will reveal how much money is left on the card.
If neither of those options are available to you, you can always just take the card down to Walmart, have the cashier scan it and he or she will easily be able to help you out. All they do is scan the card and balance is instantly known.
One final place to look is doing an online search with Yahoo or Bing and try to find websites that will find the balance for you. All you do is enter your card number on their online form and they can then show you the balance. I would be a little wary of this last method considering all of the online scammers out there today.
Once you find out if you have a balance you can shop it off. If you do not want to do this something else to consider is selling your card balance. There are two ways to do this that I have found. The first way is to sell it on eBay, and what I have found is that many people can get ninety cents on the dollar from an online auction this way. The second way is to find websites out there that will pay you for your card balances. You need to search them out on a search engine, but these companies do exist and they pay for gift card balances.

To register your card with Walmart, you have to do the following:
1. Visit WalmartGift
2. Click on "Register Now"
3. Enter your name and billing address
Once you complete this process, you are now ready to shop online. This also allows you to view transactions that have posted to the account and check the balance remaining on the card. This also helps you in case the card is lost or stolen. The Walmart Visa gift card can be used online anywhere Visa debit cards are accepted. When you check out, make sure you provide the same name and billing address the you used to register the card with Walmart, otherwise, you online transaction may declined by the merchant.
The reason why this entire registration process is necessary is because like online credit card transactions, the merchant has to match the name and billing address you provide, with the name and billing address on file with the card issuer. The NetSpend prepaid card is becoming increasingly popular, as customers turn away from the traditional, unsecured cards and look for other financial options. In this article we review this and look at its advantages and disadvantages.
The first point to note is that this is not actually a credit card but instead a debit card. Customers are not being offered a line of credit, but it has virtually identical uses and appearances.
Next we will look at how it works. A new customer is required to set up their account with their own money, before they can start using it. It can also be used to withdraw cash from ATM's, subject to cleared funds being available. You can also use this to rent a car, purchase gas at the pump, book travel accommodations, reserve a hotel room... In the age of plastic money there is nothing as advantageous to use as a prepaid visa card. A prepaid visa gift card can be used by parents, children, and senior citizens etc. in this article we shall discuss the advantages from each person's point of view.
From the parents point of view this could be the best thing possible. Imagine a parent didn't know what to get their child for their wedding or birthday and ended up giving cash instead of a prepaid visa gift card. At such times the child would accept the money and spend it on his wants and the parent wouldn't even know where that money has gone. They could ask the child but there is no foolproof method to determine whether or not the child is telling the truth. However if the parent were to purchase a visa gift card and put in the same amount of money as the credit limit for the card, it would serve that purpose as well as the purpose of keep tabs on the child's expenses.
The prepaid visa cards are re loadable and can be filled up with a new limit as and when needed. From a child's perspective this could be a good thing. For one the card has immense show off value. All children love to show off their gizmos in front of their peers. The visa gift card can serve as their show off tool. Also they provide the child for simpler payment method. There is no chance of being cheated when at a shop and waiting for the keeper to return change. They are aware of every expense they make because of the receipt they sign and undertake responsibility for. Having a card doesn't weigh you down with the loose change that one may get. They do not have to keep their money on them hence minimizing the chance of theft.
